CHECKPOINT: 30 Years of Border Crossings

CHECKPOINT: 30 Years of Border Crossings was a special anniversary project running from September 2025.

Since its foundation in 1995, Border Crossings has collaborated with artists and communities across the world, from Inuit performers to Syrian refugees, from London’s Latin American and Māori communities to partners in China, India, Ghana and beyond. We have built a remarkable body of theatre, film, festivals and community projects that embrace cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. 

With the support of a professional archivist and the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, we brought together and digitised our physical and digital records, from play texts, photographs and posters to films, oral histories and performance recordings. Volunteers helped us to capture new interviews. The resulting book, drawing on these rich materials, was written by Jasmin ‘Ofamo’oni, an award-winning Tongan (Makaunga | Talafo’ou) and New Zealand researcher and dance practitioner whose work explores intercultural and Indigenous approaches to performance. The project included an innovative performance event at Hoxton Hall on 28 November 2025, where video extracts from the company's work across three decades were punctuated with live new performances made in response by schools, drama schools, and the original artists returning to their work.
