Micaela Casalboni is joint Artistic Director and Actor at Teatro dell'Argine in Bologna, Italy. Micaela first engage with Border Crossings at the Voices of Culture event in Brussels during 2016, and has since engaged the company she leads as a partner in a range of collaborative projects. These include THE PROMISED LAND (2017-19), CRE-ACTORS (2021-22), PERFORMING POSSIBILITY (2025-26) and THE LEGEND OF EUROPA (2025-27). The interview explores each of these projects, with particular emphasis on political and ethical considerations.
Gary Funck is the Artistic Director of Et Nordfriisk Teooter (The North Frisian Theatre) in Northern Germany. In 2019, this company co-produced Richard Bean's play UNDER THE WHALEBACK with Border Crossings, directed by Lucy Dunkerley. The project brought together the two sides of the North Sea, suggesting commonalities which are important to recall in an age of rising nationalism. In a wide-ranging interview, Gary discusses the role of theatre in minority languages, and emphasises the importance of community and the rituals that bind communities together.
Dzifa Glikpoe is an actor, director and teacher, and served for some time as the Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Ghana. In 2007, Border Crossings co-produced THE DILEMMA OF A GHOST by Ama Ata Aidoo with this company, and Dzifa was one of four artists who travelled to the UK to perform. She also stayed on for a further three months as an Arts Council International Fellow, hosted by Border Crossings. The interview deals with both of these projects, and Dzifa reflects on the differences between Ghanaian and British theatre cultures, performers and audiences, and the way in which the profession is structured in both countries.
Emile Saba is a Palestinian actor who worked with Border Crossings on THIS FLESH IS MINE by Brian Woolland in 2014. This was a co-production with the Palestinian company ASHTAR Theatre, of which Emile is now Artistic Director. The interview explores the process of rehearsing the play in Ramallah, the performances there, and the challenges which the project faced when visas were denied and the conflict affected the cast.
