Border Crossings Education presents regular workshops exploring actor training and technique in intercultural theatre. As well as providing opportunities for performers to work with exciting intercultural practitioners, the Laboratory is an ongoing research project for the company, informing and renewing our creative and performance practice.

During the first week of September 2007, Border Crossings Laboratory, in association with Bronitsky and Associates (USA) present ORIGINS 2007: the first stage in a major project exploring First Nations Theatre from around the world. The workshops and symposium this September will be led by members of the ORIGINS Advisory Board of First Nations theatre-makers, who will also be working on programming the first ORIGINS Festival of First Nations Theatre.
Tuesday 4th September 2007, 10am-1pm
David Velarde, playwright from the Jicarilla Apache nation in New Mexico, USA, will lead a workshop on Native American Culture and Modern Theatre. David is the writer of many Native pieces, including Bubba and Dak'wae Nasye. He is also one of the founders of the ORIGINS Festival.
Tuesday 4th September 2007, 2pm-5pm
Harriet Nordlund, former Artistic Director of Beaivváš Sámi Teáhter – The Norwegian National Sámi Theatre Company, will lead a workshop on Indigenous people and Boarding-Schools. Harriet will introduce Sámi Theatre, and will work practically to explore through theatre and performance the experience of various indigenous peoples in relation to boarding schools, the removal of children, and transplantations.
Wednesday 5th September 2007, 10am-1pm
David Milroy, director, playwright and musician from the Palyku people in Western Australia, will lead a workshop on Traditional Culture into Contemporary Theatre. David is one of Australia's leading indigenous playwrights and directors, and won the prestigious Patrick White Award for his play Windmill Baby (pictured). He was formerly Artistic Director of Yirra Yaakin, and is active in Native Title for his people.
Wednesday 5th September 2007, 2pm-5pm
Trevor Jamieson, a leading performer of the Pitjantjatjara people in Australia, will lead a workshop on Making Theatre with Indigenous Communities. Trevor has recently been involved with a major community project, Ngapartji Ngapartji, relating the history of his own family and people, in dialogue with the elders. Ngapartji Ngapartji involves the use of indigenous language, music, movement and storytelling in a contemporary context.
